Melville Park in Portsmouth will be the site of a gathering of volunteers seeking to improve access to fishing spots at both of the ponds at Melville that receive trout from the States trout hatcheries. The upper pond ( pond 1) has a wharf for launching boats and a platform for shore fishing that is great for a limited number of children. The pond would profit from an increase in shore fishing accessibility along its banks. Small boats are allowed on the pond if they are powered by hand or electric motors. The lower pond (pond 9) is difficult to get boats to as they have to be carried down to the pond. Most fishing at this pond is done from several spots along the shore. These spots are in need of additional clearing to make them more suitable for casting. The volunteers will gather and be assigned teams to complete the project list made up by the Melville Park Committee. This is a call to the fishing community to join the Park Committee in creating opportunities for all to catch fish. Members of the Committee will be on hand for opening day to pass out applications for RI Division of Fish and Wildlife certificates to all children who have catch their first fish.
